Old School Bladder FX.

I’ve been wanting to do an 80’s style Bladder Effect for a while now.

To do this FX, the first thing I did was have my hand and arm cast in GO-CAST Silicone, the reason for doing it in silicone was because I needed to get both a super thin Oil Based clay casting out of this mould and a Plaster positive.

I melted down Monster Clay and very carefully painted it into the silicone cast mould and when it dried & cooled down, I peeled it out of the mould and put it to one side...

I then got my plaster positive out of the Silicone hand mould, clayed this down to make a plaster positive core, Did a quick silicone mould off this plaster hand to make my Master mould.

Once I had my master Mould, I got out my PS-03 Ebalta putty core. The Monster Clay Hand that I put to one side, I carefully laid it back onto the PS-03 core and blended all the edges down.

It was then moulded with the PS-03 putty and that’s the moulding all done.

To make the Latex bladder, we used the original plaster hand cast and very carefully painted on layers of latex onto the plaster, Once we had the desired amount of layers, we carefully laid on strips of clingfilm to replicate the bladder lines and laid in the tubes at the top of the arm. We then repeated painting the latex on top of the clingfilm. The arm was run at 80% softness.

Once we had all the pieces, we applied the latex bladder first with Telesis 8 then applied the silicone arm on top. It was a fun thing to make for the Academy and nice to make some ‘Old Skool’ Bladder FX’s.

Back in the summer of 2015 we got a call from local Manchester director Mat Johns, a super talented filmmaker about working on a zombie short film called A Father’s Day. The great thing about this short film was that we could go crazy with our zombie make ups, The script called for 2 lead zombies, a father and daughter plus many background zombies plus fake bodies, severed body parts and lots of blood and guts, great fun!

We lifecasted the father played by Garth Maunders and I gave this character to one of my ex students Brogan Sharp and she sculpted, moulded and ran the pieces, I over saw the look of this character along with all the other zombies portrayed in the film.

We shot for 4 days back in August 2015 in and around Manchester. We had originally shot the opening sequence a month before but unfortunately we had to postpone the shoot on day 2 and change one of the performers, which actually worked out for the better in the long run.

The shoot went really well and I couldn’t be more proud of my crews work on this short film, most of the artists I used were Ex students and they did a great job of making our zombies look as authentic as possible. On the first day we had 5 zombies and a full fake silicone body so it was great to get the biggest sequence for the FX artists out of the way early. It was a very bloody day but lots of fun!

The short film is currently doing the festival circuits all over the world , the film was produced by the very talented Chris Lane and funded through Creature England’s ishorts program.
