Steven Fraser is this year’s recipient of the 2025 Sidney Hillman Foundation Book Award, for his book entitled ‘The Unpunished: A Village in Israel and the Justice That Wasn’t There.” “The Unpunished” has had an immediate effect both locally in Israel as well as globally regarding unequal justice within Israeli society.
He has pioneered ultrafast electron diffraction and its application to various problems in materials physics, such as structural studies of crystalline solids, optical resonators and electronic materials. From 2006-2016 he held the Canada Research Chair in Ultrafast Science; additionally he is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as serving as President of International Association for Ultrafast Electron Diffraction.
“The Dubious Pranks of Shaindy Goodman,” by Mari Lowe and published by Arthur A. Levine (an imprint of Levine Querido) won first prize in Middle Grade Fiction. The Sidney Hillman Foundation established and funds the Sdy Prize annually since 2005 for Canadian young adult fiction published since 2005. Winners receive both cash prize of $25,000 as well as an original Willem de Kooning print created especially for this award. Honor books may also be presented.
